WRESTLING: Dukes named regional semifinalists, top 16 in state

The Dukes wrestlers were named the regional semifinalists Feb. 3 after defeating Independence 48-15. Sophomore Tyler Wilfong topped opponent Matt Mroczynksi on a 5-4 decision at 132 pounds and Mason Wright won his match 11-5 in the 138 weight class. Juniors Chris Miller and Dauson Hammer pinned their Independence opponents to win their matches, Miller at 170 pounds in 5:37 and Hammer at 285 pounds in 2:38.

The boys fell to Rootstown in the finals but earned three wins from Wright, Hammer, and Steve Ferguson. Wright beat Brandon Huffman 11-6, Ferguson pinned Jimmy Goforth in 1:10 at 220 pounds, and Hammer pinned Owen Conroy in 58 seconds. Despite falling to Rootstown, the Dukes wrestling team earned a top 16 finish in the state for Division 3.
