Nine Black River runners competed Saturday in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III state meet.
Pirates Tanner Hawley and Russell Schultz represented the boys team at the 87th Annual Boys State Cross Country Tournament at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.
Hawley took third place overall with a time of 15:46. Maplewood’s Tristan Dahmen and Antwerp’s Sam Williamson were the only two runners to beat him.
East Canton’s Josh Conrad and Schultz raced each other to the finish line and Conrad beat the Pirates runner across by two milliseconds. Schultz finished 21st with a time of 16:26.
Seven Lady Pirates battled against 143 runners for a top finish in the state meet. The girls took 10th place overall, beating Pettisville, St. Henry, Fredericktown, Northmor, Lancaster Fairfield Christian, and Miami East.
Hannah Heath finished 32nd with a time of 19:41, beating St. Thomas Aquinas’ Hannah Soehnlen by a millisecond across the finish line. She worked her way up from 46th place at the mile marker to 32nd to finish the race.
Madison Hawley cross the finish line at 20:08 to take 53rd place.
Black River’s Kelly Wilson and Carrie Cepect took 78th and 80th place with a three second difference between the two runners.
Breanna Clifford, Mandy Yoder, and Micayla Pluta rounded out the Lady Pirates scores with 105th, 121st, and 135th place finishes.
