Taking the field for the second time this season, the Wellington Dukes football players scrimmaged Western Reserve Blue Devils at home Friday evening.
Offensive line coach Ryan Morgan said the teams didn’t really keep score, but the Blue Devils scored three times while the Dukes only scored twice.
Each team called 10 offensive plays before switching back to defense, except in the case of turnovers.
Some of the coaching staff talked to the boys on the field after the game and commented on the teams’ slow start.
Head coach Sean Arno said he prefers not to comment on the boys’ performance until he watches the tape but noted that all three sides of the ball need work: special teams, offense, and defense.
Arno and senior Devin Adler agreed the players from Western Reserve were bigger and more physical than Independence, which is who the Dukes faced in their first scrimmage on Aug. 11.
“Definitely didn’t look as sharp as we’d like to but at this point we played better Tuesday. This was a better football team, so a better football team makes it harder on them,” Arno said.
“You’ve got to keep pushing them to get to what their best is and that was not their best,” he said.
Adler thinks the teams needs to work on offense and defense equally: “I thought we came out and we hit but we definitely need to get better,” he said.
That hasn’t changed Adler’s outlook on the year and he’s still expecting a winning season.
“Every year you go into scrimmages and expect to do good but it never happens,” he said. “You go in there and stuff falls apart and you fix it in practice. You’re never game-ready until after a few scrimmages. We’ll be game-ready when it comes down to it.”
Arno said his team will continue to train and work on different aspects of the game as it prepares to scrimmage vs. Rittman at home on Friday. The season officially kicks of Aug. 28.
