A single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a Spencer man Sunday in Penfield Township.
Loren Shick, 70, was driving east at 12:50 p.m. on Rt. 18 in his 2004 GMC Canyon truck when he veered off the left side of the road and into a field, where he eventually struck a ditch, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Suffering severe head injuries, he was flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Troopers said Shick was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The Patrol’s Elyria post was notified that Shick had died shortly before 10 p.m.
Wellington firefighters, the South Lorain County Ambulance District, and Life Flight assisted the response.
Why Sheck drove into the field is unknown but excessive speed or impairment do not appear to be factors, according to the Patrol.
