A 72-year-old man was severely injured by a pet dog Oct. 26 in Brighton Township.
He was taken by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland in critical condition while his wife, who attempted to stop the attack, was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Health Allen Hospital in Oberlin, according to the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 10 p.m., the man walked into an area of his home at 52976 Rt. 18 where boxers were being kept. The residence is split into two quarters, essentially making it a duplex.
After one dog attacked, a trooper from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, who happened to be nearby, arrived within minutes. The attack was still happening as he pulled up and he fired three shots, which killed the dog, according to the an LCSO statement.
The Lorain County dog warden determined two remaining dogs were not be a threat to the family.
Victims’ names have not yet been released as the incident is investigated.
