Both lanes of South Main Street between Cemetery Road and Dollar General will begin sharing a 40-mile per hour speed limit within the next two months, says the Ohio Department of Transportation.
As it stands, the northbound lane’s limit is 55 and the southbound’s is 35.
Wellington village manager Steve Dupee said ODOT is awaiting approval from the Ohio State Highway Patrol to officially change the speed limits, but he expects it to happen “very soon.”
ODOT’s latest budget proposal asks for authority to set variable highway speed limits according to factors like weather, decreased visibility, and anticipated traffic jams.
Right now, speed limits can only be changed in work and school zones.
A decision on that from state legislators is expected by April 1.
If approved, digital signs to notify drivers of changing speed limits would first be tested in Columbus before expanding statewide.
