Woman killed in head-on crash

A 75-year-old Wellington woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a head-on crash just west of the village.

Renate Thomas died of injuries sustained when her 2003 Ford Explorer slammed into a 1997 Ford F350 pickup truck driven by Kenneth Willbond, 20, of Rochester.

State troopers said Thomas’ SUV went left of center on state Rt. 18 around 3:31 p.m. about a mile outside Wellington’s limits, smashing into Willbond’s truck.

The Explorer slid to a stop in the westbound lane. Willbond overturned and came to a rest on his passenger side.

Willbond was trapped and had to be cut from the pickup, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He sustained “incapacitating injuries” and was taken to Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin.

Thomas was wearing a safety belt. It is unclear whether Willbond was strapped in.

Alcohol is not suspected in the crash, troopers said.
