A storage tank leaked diesel fuel into the Black River behind a farm Tuesday evening at 44610 Hughes Rd., Pittsfield Township.
Fuel flowed downstream but is now contained, said Wellington fire chief Mike Wetherbee, whose department responded to the call.
The containment area — near the intersection of West Road and Kipton Nickel Plate Road — was being cleaned up Wednesday afternoon under the supervision of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
“The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has also been out there to check the scene,” Wetherbee said. “So far no wildlife has been affected. They’ve got the spill contained in the river.”
The leak was caused by a tube coming loose from the storage tank. But how or why it happened is not known at this time, he said.
