Sweltering temperatures didn’t stop Safety Town graduates from enjoying their special day Aug. 12 with Wellington firefighters and police officers.
The kids smiled for pictures and donned new T-shirts that police Lt. Jeff Shelton said were able to be quickly made with the help of the fire department and a New London clothing company.
“We don’t have a T-shirt company out here, so one of the parents turned me on to Buckeye Korner Custom Shirts,” Shelton said. I called him to make the order, and within 24 hours I was holding the Safety Town shirts. The firefighter officers and lieutenants voted to cover the cost as well. It’s great to see our safety forces coming together to work as one.”
DARE also made a $1,500 donation to the Wellington school district at commencement. Shelton said this is the first year that the auxiliary police department has led the Safety Town program.
“I ran the program for 21 years,” he said. “After getting promoted, I’m not able to be so flexible now. That led me to turn it over to auxiliary, who are now running it along with DARE and the fire department. The program just kept going and it’s worked out well.”
