Driving to and from downtown Wellington on Rt. 18 between Depot and Kelly streets will take longer begining Friday.
Repairs to the CSX railroad crossing by the Rt. 58 intersection are scheduled through April 16, according to Joyce Miller, an Ohio Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
Miller said ODOT is only involved with setting the detour, which will take westbound drivers down Rt. 58 to U.S. 20 to state Rt. 511, then south to Rt. 18. The detour is the reverse for eastbound drivers.
The work involves removal of asphalt and filler panels that abut the tracks, according to an email from Rob Doolittle, a CSX spokesman.
The rail company will also make any necessary repairs to the subgrade, reinstall the filler panels, and repave the intersection.
“CSX appreciates residents’ patience while we complete this important infrastructure (improvement) in the community,” Doolittle said. “We are committed to working as quickly as safety allows to return this important intersection to service.”
Doolittle said the repair cost was unavailable, but CSX spent $173 million on infrastructure in Ohio in 2014 including maintenance of the 2,000 crossings and 4,000 tracks in the state.
Ohio is one of 23 states that CSX operates in and it handles nearly 2.9 million carloads of freight annually in the state.
Between 50 to 75 trains pass east and west through Wellington daily, according to CSX and ODOT. The tracks are part of CSX’s route between Chicago and Buffalo.
Cargo includes cars, construction materials, grain products, manufactured goods, minerals, and other materials.
Wellington mayor Hans Schneider said the repairs were originally scheduled for November but were delayed so as not to disrupt traffic during construction of the $13 million underpass nearby on Rt. 58.
That project began in 2013 and the underpass opened Nov. 25.
Schneider said he hopes the work minimally disrupts traffic and that customers driving to downtown businessses will use the detours.
