Saying goodbye is never easy.
But those who love and cherish the old McCormick Middle School will have the opportunity to do so at “The Last Lunch” on Oct. 17.
The Spirit of 76 Museum, Wellington Schools, and volunteers are joining together to sponsor a final meal, dance in the gym, and self-guided tour of the building.
The “last lunch” will include happy Joses, sloppy Joes, Johnny Marzetti, chili and peanut butter and honey sandwiches.
People will also have the opportunity to play basketball in the gym before the dance begins at 6:30 p.m.
At 6 p.m. attendees will gather in the gym to sing the alma mater.
Headlining the dance will be the Rock Island Band and teachers from the past and present will attend to chaperone.
Al Leiby of the Spirit of ‘76 museum is helping with the planning and has been reaching out to teachers he remembers from his time at McCormick.
He said that when he graduated in 1971 he was just glad to get out of there, but is now sad to see her go.
Three or four televisions will be set up in classrooms to display pictures throughout the years. Yearbooks will also be available to thumb through.
“I am hoping for a large turnout,” Leiby said. “We’re getting a pretty good response.”
