Two new interns joined the Wellington Schools athletic department last week.
When the district made significant cuts at the end of the last school year, athletic director Denny Ziegler lost his fall and winter event managers. Taking their place this year are two unpaid interns.
Kyle Lingo, a senior at Baldwin Wallace University, and John Bowman, a 2014 graduate of Xavier College and 2010 graduate of Wellington High School, started Sept. 1.
Ziegler said the two will each work about three days a week.
The interns will take on a variety of tasks. Ziegler said their main priority will be updating the district website with team rosters, game information, and articles. Other responsibilities will include helping with pre-game set up, attending county and conference meetings, and possibly helping with player eligibility.
“They want as much hands-on experience as possible,” he said. “I’m kind of leaving it up to them as far as what they want to learn.”
Bowman said he liked that he’ll be learning every aspect of being an athletic director. He’s also glad to be back in Wellington.
“It’s good to be back,” he said. “There are a lot of familiar faces that I haven’t seen in five years so that’s kind of nice and then there’s also a lot of new faces in Wellington.”
Ziegler said he went two years without any help in the department except from event managers who worked the scoreboard and speaker system at middle school games. Although he didn’t have too much difficulty managing his responsibilities, he’s excited to have more time out of the office.
“It’s a great way to manage my time,” he said. “They allow me to be more present at events, interact more with students, and it allows me to implement new things.”
Ziegler said it’s a common misconception that the only responsibilities an athletic director has is to schedule games and create rosters. There’s a lot of administrative work that goes on behind the scenes.
For example, Ziegler has to rate the officials for each home contest or else the district gets fined. He also completes ticket reports, confirms all event workers are scheduled, attends monthly conference and county meetings, schedules and attends monthly coaches meetings, and attends all home games, among another things.
Bowman said he’s glad to be able to learn the administrative side of the job because he has more experience with field preparation.
Ziegler expects the two interns to be with the district the entire year.
