Four positions will open at the end of this year on the Main Street Wellington board of directors.

Chair Patti Young, vice chair Harold Sumpter, and director Guy Wells all have terms ending Dec. 31. Lisa Whitaker’s position will also open due to a job transfer.

Although four seats are open, only three new board members will be voted in.

The fourth, traditionally held by a representative from a local non-profit group, will be left empty for the time being, according to Main Street director Jennifer Arntz.

Wells represents the Southern Lorain County Historical Society but Arntz said she is not certain whether the society will continue to be represented on the board next year.

In the past, Herrick Memorial Library and Wellington Chamber of Commerce reps have had turns on the Main Street board.

Arntz has started spreading the word that her organization is looking people to run for a board position, volunteer, or join a committee.

You do not have to be a member to join one of the four committees, which oversee marketing and events, business development, design, and operations.

“We are going to try really hard to look at filling those spots with people who may bring something new to our group,” she said.

Arntz would like to have a business owner or worker join the board but anyone wishing to help local businesses and the community grow are welcome to apply. She is working on a new application form that she plans to distribute soon.

Another aspect of the group’s practices Arntz is looking to change is the cost of dues. As of now, the cost of membership for one person is $35, a family is $50, and a business is $365.

She’s hoping to find a way to lower dues and possibly implement different levels of membership.

“We’re working on a lot of changes to grow our organization,” Arntz said. “It is a really good cause and we’re growing but we have a ways to go.”

Main Street Wellington members will vote for the new board members at their annual meeting in January. Those voted in will serve three-year terms.
