Thirty-eight pine-box derby cars were entered in the 30th Annual Awana Grand Prix, held March 1 at First Baptist Church in Wellington and featuring 135 racers and spectators.
The event featured competitions kids in third through sixth grades as well as an “open class” for younger children and teens.
First, second, and third place trophies were presented in three categories for the Awana clubbers: speed, design, and novelty design. Elimination heats were run to determine the speed winners. Judges studied the cars prior to the race to award the design (race car) winners as well as the novelty design (unique car) winners. First, second, and third-place trophies were also presented for the speed winners in the “open class.”
The 2017 Awana Grand Prix winners were:
• Speed: Ranger Metter first), Kelsey Metter (second), Nick Gancos third).
• Design: Roy Lamb (first), Joseph Owsley (second), Ranger Metter (third).
• Novelty design: Livi Nutt (first), Joan Lamb (second), Alexa Gallion (third).
• Open class speed: Elyana Metter (first), Job Owsley (second), LilyAnne Gancos (third).
Awana is an international children’s ministry with clubs meeting in local churches. The Awana clubs at First Baptist Church meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:15 p.m. from September through April.
