It's for Haiti; teacher to dress up like Hannah Montana

Students at Westwood Elementary School are hoping to see teacher Dan Gundert don a wig and a sparkly shirt to perform as Hannah Montana.

The concert is an incentive in the Make A Change For Haiti fundraising campaign in which students are collecting coins to help the island nation of Haiti that was recently devastated by earthquakes.

"This is a reminder that people need help," Sheila Buckeye, the principal at Westwood, said. "Kids need to know there is something they can do."

Buckeye came up with the idea for the Make A Change For Haiti fundraising campaign, and teachers decided students could use an incentive to get involved. There was a contest to determine which teacher -- Gundert or physical education instructor Kristy Holliday -- would receive the most coins.

If Holliday won, she would set up an obstacle course for the students, an event that is usually only held at the end of the school year. Gundert agreed to become a Hannah Montana look-alike named Dannah Mongundert, and to perform in a lip sync concert for the students.

Students began filling the jars with change, and the donations grew so large the coins had to be transferred to recycling bins. The donations were delivered to Farmers Savings Bank on Friday to be counted and sorted. The money will be given to the United Methodist Committee on Relief to be used toward providing food, water, and medical care to Haiti. An official tabulation has not yet been determined, but Buckeye is certain Gundert is going to come out the winner.

Last week, students also participated in 100 Days of School, a national celebration to commemorate the 100th day of the school year. Students designed posters as part of the celebration, and Brennen Cole incorporated the Haiti theme into his artwork by creating a poster titled "One Hundred People Helping Haiti."
