Dukes defeat Lutheran West and remain unbeaten in PAC
The Wellington Dukes boys basketball remains unbeaten in the PAC after winning 50-48 against Lutheran West on Friday night.
Coach Nathan Morris was excited about the win.
"This is the first time we've beaten them in league play," Morris said. "And to do it at their place -- that's pretty special."
It wasn't an easy win for the Dukes, however, as evidenced by the close score. "We'd go up eight or nine, and they'd creep right back in," Morris said. "Free throws were key. We were only 57 percent but we made 13 free throws and they shot six."
Junior Justin Kidd was the high scorer of the night with 22 points. Morris said his leadership was important for the win.
"Kidd had a big night," he said. "He was hitting his key baskets and being aggressively offensive."
This week the Dukes play at Oberlin Tuesday night and against Brooklyn at home on Friday.
"We've got some big games coming up. Brooklyn and Oberlin are going to be tough games," Morris said. "Oberlin is a tough place to play"
How does Morris feel about the team's perfect PAC record? "Pretty excited, really. The guys have worked hard and put themselves in a good position," he said. Morris is doing well in his first year as head coach, but he doesn't take all the credit. "I'm very lucky to have a good group of guys and a great coaching staff. Sometimes -- lots of times -- I feel pretty lucky."
