Wellington village council At-A-Glance

At the Jan. 19 meeting of Wellington village council, five members present (Helen Dronsfield, Jeff Hyde, Steve Maurer, Sandy Denes, Guy Wells), council:

Utility committee

* Heard a report from the utility committee meeting that was held before the council meeting. Village administrator Steve Pyles will continue to monitor electric use for the Power Rate Study instead of making a recommendation to council at this time. Clerk treasurer Karen Webb reported to the committee that garbage collection rates will be increasing for residents by 30 cents. She is still waiting to hear if the village will be receiving a solid waste grant that helps cover garbage rates and enables the village to keep the costs low for customers. The committee discussed the purchase of a bank ditch mower. The next meeting of the utility committee will be prior to council on Feb. 16.

Take out the trash

* Voted 5-0 on third reading of Ordinance 2009-55 enacting a new chapter 767 of the codified ordinance relative to business refuse. The ordinance states that every operator of a business within the Village shall dispose of all of the rubbish generated by the business in a clean and sanitary manner by placing it in approved receptacles or in other approved rubbish disposal facilities.

Cut your weeds

* Heard a first reading and passed on emergency Ordinance 2010-02 which authorizes assessments for mowing fees that will be charged to residents who do not cut weeds according to village standards. Residents whose weeds are noncompliant will be notified prior to being fined.

Amending policy manual

* Heard a first reading and passed on emergency Ordinance 2010-03 to amend the personnel policy manual which deals with position vacancy and announcement. The amendment states that a vacancy must be posted for five days, any interested employee should submit a written notice of interest, and vacancies shall be filled insofar as practicable by the promotion of qualified employees.

New equipment

* Heard first reading of Ordinance 2010-04 that authorizes the village administrator to enter into a contract for the sale/trade-in of an existing tow motor and the purchase of a boom mower attachment.

Meeting rescheduled

* The second council meeting of February has been rescheduled for Tuesday Feb. 16 due to the holiday on Feb. 15.
