Another 44 points and nearly 500 yards on the ground have secured the Black River Pirates a spot in Friday’s regional final.
The Sullivan team (11-1) defeated the Wickliffe Blue Devils (8-4) by a score of 44-6 this weekend in a game eerily similar to its Nov. 3 encounter with Gilmour Academy in the first round of the playoffs.
Senior Riley Gibbs led the way with 207 yards on just 14 carries, followed by backfield mates Travis Sexton and Jacob Campbell with 141 and 111 yards respectively.
All 487 total yards of offense came on the ground without the Pirates having to throw a pass — a growing trend throughout this season as defenses have not been able to adjust to Black River’s overwhelming, blue collar attack.
Gibbs, Campbell, and fellow back Justin Zacharyasz each scored two touchdowns. Gibbs broke the plane on runs of 55 and 71 yards.
Defensively, the Pirates held Wickliffe to just 207 yards with 67 of those coming on a late score in the fourth quarter.
Black River will face the undefeated and top-seeded South Range Raiders of Canfield in the Division V Region 17 final at 7 p.m. on Friday at Northwest High School in Canal Fulton.
