The Black River Pirates (10-1) are heading back to the regional semifinals after a dominant 44-13 first round playoff win Friday over the Gilmour Academy Lancers (6-5-1).
Sticking with a ground attack that overwhelmed opposing defenses all season, the Pirates racked up 440 rushing yards on the backs of seniors Riley Gibbs (182 yards), Jacob Campbell (164), and Travis Sexton (99).
A 31-yard touchdown pass earned Gilmour Academy a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, but two scoring runs from Campbell put the Pirates on top 13-7 by halftime.
In the third quarter, another touchdown run by Campbell and two from Sexton essentially put the game away.
Gibbs added one more score, a 54 yard run, in the fourth before Gilmour was able to cross the goal-line one last time with under a minute left in the game.
Next up for Black River is a date with the seventh-seeded Wickliffe Blue Devils (8-3-1), who upset second-seeded Grand Valley 25-22. The Pirates will attempt to move beyond where their season ended last year — a 30-0 regional semifinal loss to eventual Division V state champion Canton Central Catholic.
The game will be played at 7 p.m. Friday night at North Ridgeville High School.
