Seven Wellington wrestlers place at invitiational, Dukes finish sixth overall


Dukes varsity wrestlers finished sixth overall this past weekend at the Knights of Columbus Invitational at Avon Lake.

Seven wrestlers took top places in the tournament and Wellington combined for 148 points to tie for sixth with Avon Lake.

Steve Ferguson and Chris Miller advanced to the championship match but came up short, taking second place in their weight classes. Miller lost to Avon’s Mark Campo at 170 pounds and Ferguson fell to Amherst’s Todd Hastings at 220 pounds.

Perkins’ Lucas Salmon was able to defeat Wellington’s Colin Shaffstall 8-3 at 126 pounds. Shaffstall took fourth place in his weight class.

Wellington’s Tyler Wilfong, 138 pounds, defeated Brooklyn’s Jack Rebar 10-2 and Mason Wright at 145 pounds beat Columbia’s Tony Szablewski 7-3.

Vermilion’s Alex Matos was no match for Max Mohrman at 152 pounds, as the Wellington wrestler beat him in 4:53.

All three wrestlers took fifth place at the tournament in their weight classes.

Nick Fox rounded out the seven top finishers for the Dukes, taking sixth place at 195 pounds.

The Dukes will compete in the Bellevue Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
