CROSS COUNTRY: Dukes earn ninth place at districts

The Dukes took ninth place Saturday at the Lorain County Community College district meet.

Ten Wellington runners tried to finish in the top 16 places to advance to regionals.

Gage Conrad and Andy Conway were the top boys racers for the Dukes, taking 39th and 44th places.

Five other Dukes runners placed 55th, 69th, 72nd, 85th, and 90th to help the team earn ninth place in a field of 14 teams.

Lady Duke Emily Watters was the first Wellington girl to cross the finish line with a time of 22:55 to earn 43rd place.

Meredith Meyers and Kaitlyn McKinley followed closely behind taking 62nd and 64th places.

The Dukes earned sixth place overall Oct. 17 in the Patriot Athletic Conference meet.

Sophomore Gage Conrad led the way for the Wellington runners, earning 24th place with a time of 18:33.

Andy Conway, Henry Haas, and Logan Evans finished right behind him taking 30th, 34th, and 38th place.

Black River’s Shane Mesko beat Wellington’s Maison Jackson to the finish line by 10 seconds, earning Jackson 56th place.

Sophomore Drew Donovan raced Clearview’s David Lebron and Brookside’s Zackory Langin to the finish line with a time of 21:55. Wellington’s Sam Becher rounded out the Dukes’ 169 points overall, which allowed them to defeat Keystone, Clearview, and Brookside.

Meredith Meyers and three teammates competed against 59 runners in the varsity girls race.

Meyers and Emily Watters led the way, earning 26th and 29th places for the Lady Dukes.

Freshman Katlyn Mckinley sprinted to the finish line beating Firelands Kerrigan Borton by three seconds to take home 39th place and Rachel Lynn finished with a time of 27:25 to earn 54th place.
