Remember “Little House on the Prairie”?
I remember an episode where two elderly ladies lived together. One passed away and her children all came, so the other elderly woman got the idea to fake her death so she could see her three children she hadn’t seen in years. One was in the army and she hadn’t seen him in 14 years.
Back in those days, funerals were held in your home. Everyone was there. She hid herself in a corner, all in black with a black veil covering her face so no one would notice her. All her children and grandchildren gathered around her casket, saying how they should have visited more often.
What a shock to everyone, especially her family, when she walked up to her children and took off her veil. They were all upset and asked her, “Why would you do a thing like this, faking your own death?” She told them it was the only way she could think of to get them to come to see her. The preacher didn’t even know she was faking her own death! After the shock of all this, they turned her wake into a welcome home party.
Why don’t some elderly people don’t see their children for ages? I’m lucky! All my children stayed nearby. If you know anyone who lives alone, go visit them for even a short period of time. They will be so happy and will appreciate your visits.
When I worked at the Wellington Manor nursing home, I connected with an elderly man who didn’t get many visits. I would bring him to my home at Thanksgiving and Christmas so he could share dinner with me and my children.
He was a small man who was under five feet tall. My children all called him Grandpa. The girls would always give him hugs because they thought he was so cute. He really enjoyed coming to our home. It was sad for all of us when he passed away.
Go visit someone. Remember you’ll be old one of these days.

• 1 cup ketchup
• 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
• 1 tsp. chili powder
• 1 tsp. salt
• 2 dashes Tabasco sauce
• 2 cups water
Bring to boil. Brown ribs at 450 degrees for half an hour. Drain fat. Turn oven down to 350 degrees and add sauce. Baste and turn every 15 minutes for 1 1/2 hours.
Make hamburger patties out of two to three pounds of ground beef, 3/4 cup chopped onions, 1/2 cup green peppers (chopped), 1 tsp. garlic salt, 3/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. pepper, and an egg. Mix all together and fry in 3 tbsp. oil or shortening. Brown well. Place in baking dish and add sauce. Cover and bake 30 minutes in 350 degree oven. Serve on toasted buns. May add 1/2 cup bread crumbs and 1/4 cup milk to stretch further.
Sauce: 1/2 cup ketchup, 1 tbsp. salt. Place a slice of onion on each hamburger in baking dish. Cover and bake.
Meat Potato Burgers
• 1 lb. ground beef
• 3/4 cup coarsely grated raw potato
• 1/4 cup grated onion
• 2 tbsp. chopped green pepper
• 1 tsp. salt
• 1/2 tsp. pepper
• 1 egg
• Drippings or other fat
• 1 cup tomato juice or puree
• 1 tbsp. flour
Mix all ingredients except fat, tomato juice, and flour. Form into four or five flat cakes. Brown the cakes on both sides in fat in a frying pan. Add tomato juice, cover cakes, and simmer slowly until done, about 25 minutes. Remove cakes and keep hot. Mix flour with a little water and stir slowly into the tomato juice in which the cakes simmered. Cook slowly, stirring constantly until thickened. Pour sauce over cakes.
• 11 oz. oyster crackers
• 1 package ranch dressing mix
• 1/2 tsp. dill weed
• 1/4 tsp. lemon pepper
• 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
• 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
Combine oil and seasonings. Pour over crackers. Stir to coat. Put on cookie sheet and bake at 250 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Stir gently halfway through baking time. Cool on paper towels.
