The Country Skateland Skating Club just got back from the 2016 United States Roller Skating National Championships held July 24-Aug. 1 in Lincoln, Neb.

The junior precision team Quad Squad won its eighth straight national title. These kids, ages nine to 16, worked hard all year to defend their title and had to qualify against competitors from five other states at regionals in June in West Chester, Ohio.

There are 12 children on the team from Amherst, Oberlin, Wellington, and other local cities.

Skaters include Hailey Kuhn, Hailey Hilton, Madeline Patawaran, Madelyn Kuhn, Maggie Miller, Maggie Michael, Savannah Dunlap, Olivia Milam, Kate Lazar, Brittany Wressell, Mandy DeWitt, and Estella Ohly.

Another skater, Sarah Massey of Berea, placed second in Junior World Class, cementing her position to compete with the world team in Italy this year for the fourth year in a row.

Wressell also placed third in her creative solo event, and Emily Weegmann was third in Junior World Class. The team Arcadence won the bronze medal in Quartet, which consisted of Paul Holbrook, 19, Sarah Massey, 17, Wressell, 16, and Patawaran, 12. Lazar won the silver medal in Juvenile Elementary B freestyle as well.

Roller skating is much like ice skating, where the skaters do jumps and spins to choreography and travel the country for competitions. Country Skateland has been home to many national champions throughout the years.
