Screeching tires and crunching steel could be heard shortly after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of New London Eastern and Hawley Roads in Sullivan.
A silver Nissan Altima was headed north on Hawley Road when it reached the stop sign at New London Eastern Road, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Tim Hoffman.
After making a complete stop, driver Edward Xie attempted to continue through the intersection when a red Toyota Corolla came over the crest of the hill on Hawley Road.
“It’s a blind intersection,” Hoffman said, noting the large trees. “You come over the hill and all of a sudden the intersection’s there.”
Signs warning drivers of the “dangerous intersection ahead” were posted on both roads.
Wellington fire chief Mike Wetherbee said it’s harder for people not familiar with the area to judge these type of intersections.
Xie, of Columbus, had two passengers in the car at the time of the crash. Ruowen Huang and Xiaoyu Cai were both sitting in the back seat.
None were wearing seat belts, according to Hoffman who saw a cut on Xie’s head and blood on the windshield. Passengers riding in the back seat aren’t required to wear seat belts.
Dennis Telles of LaGrange was driving the Corolla. He told Hoffman he was going 50 mph when he tried to stop.
The Altima was struck on the passengers’ side and spun around before striking a street sign and coming to a rest on the side of the road.
Xie, Huang, and Cai were taken to Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin with non-life threatening injuries. Telles declined treatment.
