Staff Report

A man suffered a gunshot wound to the head Thursday afternoon near the intersection of Jones and Hawley Road in Wellington Township.

He was found alive and taken by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to a press release from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.

The man’s identity is, as of Friday, being withheld pending the notification of family members.

At 9:47 a.m., sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in the 23000 block of Hawley Road to perform a well-being check on the man, who had not reported to work.

After deputies were unable to locate him in the house or surrounding areas, he was declared missing and an all-points bulletin was issued to surrounding police departments.

At 3:13 p.m., deputies were called back to the area after the man was seen lying, injured, in a farm field to the southeast of Jones and Hawley Road.

He was treated by the South Lorain County Ambulance District with assistance from Wellington police, firefighters, and officers from the Ohio Division of Natural Resources.

The incident is under investigation but it is not believed there was any other person involved.
