Former LifeFlight coordinator chosen as new South Lorain County Ambulance District director

Clyde “Skip” Gentry has been named new executive director of the South Lorain County Ambulance District.

He takes the job after most recently serving as a flight nurse specialist and base coordinator for Metro LifeFlight — part of a 37-year career in emergency care.

“The board received applications from an impressive number of highly qualified candidates and we’re happy to bring Skip on,” said Butch Holmes, president of the SLCAD board of trustees. “He brings a wealth of management, teaching, and clinical experience to the district. Skip’s talents are well-known throughout the state.”

Gentry, of West Salem, is a state-certified registered nurse and flight nurse. Other certifications held include advanced cardiac life support, pediatric life support, neonatal advanced life support, and advanced trauma life support.

Former executive director Dave Knapp submitted his resignation to the SLCAD board May 24 after holding the position for two years.

In March, Knapp had received a final written warning regarding a series of incidents involving alleged harassment and intimidation toward SLCAD employees and patients. His last day of work was May 31.

District supervisors Fred Swanson and Amy Kiley assumed the executive director’s responsibilities in the interim.

“They not only performed their regular jobs, but shared the executive director’s responsibilities for a few months,” Holmes said. “Their knowledge and experience will be very valuable to the district going forward.”

SLCAD provides emergency care services to a 125-square-mile area covering the villages of Wellington and Rochester as well as Wellington, Rochester, Brighton, Huntington, and Penfield Townships.
