Thieves use dump truck to break into industrial park

A stolen dump truck was used to break through a padlocked fence early Wednesday morning and steal items from businesses at 201 Erie Street.

Security footage from around 5 a.m. shows one man breaking into the industrial park, which lies just east of the Lorain County Fairgrounds.

The dump truck was also parked in the industrial park before being stolen. Police said they have not determined how the suspects gained access to it.

After abandoning the truck on the property, the suspects loaded another vehicle with scrap metal and other items and used it to get away, according to police.

Investigators say it took at least two men to pull of the heist. The Wellington police department’s Facebook page shared an image from the security footage with a timestamp of 5:18 a.m. that shows a man in a dark-colored hoodie with yellow writing on it and baseball cap.

Later in the day, police chief Tim Barfield said his officers are investigating several leads.

“We’ve had some names given to us and we’re following up on that,” he said. “I have no idea how they got inside initially. My guess would be they jumped the fence but I don’t know that.”
