Historical society tour planned for September

Mark your calendar for the Southern Lorain County Historical Road Show Tour.

The free event is planned for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 24. It’s a collaboration between historical societies in Wellington, Pittsfield, Rochester, Penfield, LaGrange, and Huntington Townships.

Each will have a unique display to show guests on the tour, which also aims to increase the number of regular visitors to the sites.

Anyone who visits all six locations will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 gift card.

Board members from each society recently met at Bread-N-Brew in Wellington to discuss plans.

Lynn Youngblood, a board member in Pittsfield, and Ernie Hartman, Huntington’s board president, began formulating plans for the tour in March.

“All of the societies have the same problem with traffic, even Wellington, which is a much higher advertised and more populous area,” Hartman said. “I thought if we could all get together and help everyone see them all on one day, they’ll see what each one has to offer and how it lines up with their interests.”

Scott Markel, president of Wellington’s Spirit of ‘76 Museum, said it’s time to try some new things.

“We’re trying to bring people north of Rt. 20 down this way,” he said. “There’s a whole county down here too. Even though the title of our museum is Spirit of ‘76, you’re going to hear about many stories besides that, about people and places that went on to great things if you come and take our tour.”

For the tour, the Spirit of ‘76 Museum will offer antique appraisals with the first one free of charge. Pittsfield’s historical society will focus on the Civil War and a restored one-room schoolhouse.

In Penfield, old tools will be shown while Huntington will focus on one-room schoolhouses.

LaGrange will touch on aspects of the Kipton Nickle-Plate quarry community and Rochester will help guests touch up on family tree research.
