A man was injured after being thrown from his car Tuesday in Wellington Township.
Phillip Smith, 26, of Wellington, was driving north on Rt. 58 near Peck Wadsworth Road just after noon when he lost control of his Volkswagen Passat and hit an embankment. The car went in the air, rolled, and landed in the front yard of a home at 19901 Rt. 58.
There were no passengers or additional vehicles involved in the crash.
Smith was taken by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Wellington police Lt. Jeff Shelton said he was conscious and aware of the situation when talking with responders.
A later statement said Smith was in serious condition.
“Once he landed, the vehicle rolled numerous times and ejected him through the driver’s window,” Shelton said. “There was a car seat in the back but the driver said no others were present. Firefighters and I walked the area here to confirm that.
“He looks like he has a lot of injuries. He was spitting up some blood and may have lost some teeth. The car went down into the ditch and went airborne before coming to a stop.”
Witnesses told investigators on the scene that excessive speed could have been a factor.
The statement said Smith wasn’t wearing a seat belt before the crash and alcohol or drug use is suspected but not confirmed.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Elyria Post is investigating the incident.
