Rosemark named village employee of the year

Water superintendent Mark Rosemark didn’t just earn the title of 2016 employee of the year in Wellington — the title is now named after him.

As Rosemark was named the village’s top employee Dec. 19 during a council meeting, mayor Hans Schneider said the accolade will be called the Mark Rosemark Award going forward.

Rosemark has been the head of the water department since 1991 and has served in the village since 1976. He took over as interim village manager this past July when Steve Pyles vacated the position for a similar job in the city of Granville and held the seat until Nov. 29 when the newly-hired Steve Dupee arrived.

In 2006, Rosemark stepped into the same role between the departure of Dupee’s father, Bob, Wellington’s first village manager, and the hiring of Pyles.

During the transition period this summer, Rosemark maintained a full-time schedule at both the water plant and as interim village manager. He was frequently praised by council during that time for “wearing two hats” for Wellington.

“In addition to his decades of service and commitment to this village, for the second time in a decade, he has helped lead this village through a transition,” said Schneider. “This year, the work that you did to bring in everyone to help you, and to help us move forward, we can never be thankful enough or repay you for. It’s an honor to give you this award.”

Rosemark said he was happy for the recognition but considers the extra work this year just part of what’s expected.

“It is very much appreciated but absolutely unnecessary,” he said. “My resounding theme is that what I did was take advantage of all of our employees and what they were willing to do. What they were willing to do is what they’ve always done. Everybody did their job and stepped up the avenues of communication.”

He said he felt like his term as interim manager helped rebuild morale that had been lost within the village’s utility departments.

“I feel there’s a much more positive vibe going forward. I attribute a lot of that to the initiatives started last year by mayor Schneider. This year is closing out on a very positive note. We got the best guy we possibly could have landed for our village manager. The work will continue as it always as,” he said.

When asked about advice on getting started in local government or department administration, Rosemark said to listen to others’ input.

“You have to assess your resources and your people are your resources,” he said. “Utilize them. The best thing about being village manager is learning how to delegate. It was easy because every one of these people step up and ask what’s needed. Always take advantage of the resources available to you.”
