The village’s biggest cancer charity fundraiser has been cancelled as part of an American Cancer Society move to merge its Relay for Life events nationwide.

Southern Lorain County runs and walks have been combined with Lorain and Elyria events, effectively ending the Relay traditionally held each June on Willard Memorial Square in Wellington.

One central event will now take place at Elyria Catholic High School in a bid to cut expenses.

No date for that has been set, but a planning meeting is scheduled for Oct. 5, said Suzan Piskur, who will serve as community manager for the Lorain County Relay for Life.

“We’re increasing our investment in our mission, trying to improve the experience for volunteers, and trying to reduce our expense ratio,” she said.

Pizkur said in the Cleveland market alone, events have been reduced from 30 to 17. Lake County also went from three to one events, she said.

“The central event is going to be a lot bigger,” she said. “One of the things we heard from everyone was that participation has been down and committees aren’t big enough. There’s just so much to do for a small handful of people. With this merging into one large event we’ll have more people and more teams involved. We’re using our donor dollars more efficiently this way.”
