A new 14,000-square-foot cement base is installed and ready for bleachers at the Dukes’ football stadium on Dickson Street.

Wellington Builders completed the $49,000 project Sept. 1 after about a week of work.

“We’re all finished up besides some stuff around the edges,” said Mitch Senghas of Wellington Builders as he and his crew were wrapping up the job at the stadium. “We don’t want anyone to trip and fall in a hole or something. They could put the bleachers on here right now if they were here. The project went smoothly besides some weather issues but we got it in all right.”

Seating from Bleachers On Demand is due to arrive Friday morning before the Dukes’ first home game that night and be placed on top of the cement.

The one-week rental bleachers will cost the district $3,000 before they’re replaced with $34,000 temporary seating for the rest of this season.

“Apparently there isn’t much of a process to setting up the rented bleachers,” said schools treasurer Tina Gabler. “Bleachers On Demand said they’d be here Friday morning to get them situated for us.”

The Wellington school board has been advised to come to a resolution on permanent bleachers before Dec. 1.

Those permanent seats will likely cost between $210,000 and $230,000.

The Dukes kick off their first home game at 7 p.m. Friday against New London.
