Wellington band doughnuts have become somewhat of an institution at the Lorain County Fair, and this year was no different.

The stand, run by the Wellington Band Boosters, has been serving homemade doughnuts since 1964, said Joanna Broome, who manages the operation at the fair.

“The band boosters is a group of parents who’ve been putting this together since day one,” she said. “The doughnuts have become legendary. They’re made by a group of talented, wonderful kids and parents who care.”

Lines at the stand were constant throughout fair week, especially in the evening hours, when they reached as far back as 50 feet from the counter as customers awaited frosted, sprinkled, and powdered treats.

“This is our big fundraiser for the year and we put our heart and soul into it,” Broome said. “We appreciate the support of this entire community and county.”

Jennifer Garrett runs the band boosters and looks forward to serving up its special brand of pastries each year.

“Kids volunteer their time after the march and attend band practice in the morning,” she said. “The booth helps pay for field trips, new uniforms, and fees associated with extracurricular activities. Business has been steady but we’ve seen lines stretching down the entire midway at nighttime.”
