A deadly pall was cast over the Lorain County Fair shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday when a Lorain woman was hit and killed on the way to her car.

The 38-year-old Lorain resident, whose name has not yet been released, died shortly after she was struck by a dark blue Ford Mustang in what Lorain County sheriff’s deputies say was an apparent drunk driving crash.

Capt. Rick Thomas said Gregg Box, 61, of Strongsville, was behind the wheel. What’s worse, he didn’t stop.

The victim was walking with others along Fairgrounds Road just outside the gates. Someone managed to push another person using a wheelchair out of the way before the Mustang hit.

Thomas said EMTs from the Grafton fire department were working at the fair and responded instantly. Yet the Lorain woman couldn’t hold on and was pronounced dead before a medical helicopter could take her to the hospital.

Box fled the scene, driving across a yard off Rt. 18 and knocking down a mailbox. Thomas said he then was in a crash at Rt. 58 and US 20 that’s being investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Later, Box was found at Burger King back in Wellington and was taken into custody.

He was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, and failure to stop after the two crashes.

“He was particularly callous about having hit another person,” said Thomas, who believes more charges will be added to the list after the county prosecutor’s office reviews the case.

Box has a clean record with local court systems. But Thomas said he has been the center of recent complaints in Cuyahoga County.

On Aug. 23, police received reports he was driving while intoxicated in the area of Rt. 252 and Sprague Road. On Aug. 28, another call to police claimed Box was operating recklessly. In both cases, officers were unable to locate the suspect vehicles, Thomas said.
