Tina Gabler was hired June 29 by the Wellington school board as the district’s new treasurer.
Gabler comes with a strong background in school district finance management. From 1990 to 2014 she served as treasurer and assistant treasurer in the Northmor School District in Galion, Ohio.
For the past two years she was the fiscal services director at META Solutions, an IT firm located in Columbus that handles network troubleshooting for school districts among other clients.
“There was a recent major layoff at META and my position there was abolished,” said Gabler. “I told the board that I am not a job-hopper and didn’t leave META by choice. I want to stay in Wellington as long as they’ll have me or until I retire.”
She signed a three-year contract that with an annual salary of $80,000 and will be Wellington’s third school treasurer since 2014, succeeding Michael Pissini and Brad McCracken.
Both prior treasurers left Wellington to accept positions in other districts.
“I’m feeling very good about coming to Wellington,” she said. “Northmor is very similar in terms of size and student population. Financially it is also in the same realm. It just feels great to be a school treasurer again.”
After $2.5 million in cuts in 2015, Gabler feels the district has been put back on the proper path to success.
“In conversation with the superintendent, it seems like a lot of legwork has already been done in putting the district back on the right track,” she said. “From what I understand there has been decline in enrollment. When that happens you lose state funding. Losing the funding unfortunately creates the need for layoffs and cuts. As hard as it might have been the cuts were a necessary evil.”
Even though there are similarities between the Northmor and Wellington school systems, Gabler said the differences she sees will be a welcome change.
“Northmor didn’t actually have a town per say,” she said. “It was really just two small villages and very rural. I look forward to working with the folks and businesses in the Wellington community. Working with the businesses that support the school district will be a new concept for me. From what I understand there is a pretty big fair around here too and I’m excited to see that.”
Gabler will take office July 5 on an interim basis before her contract officially begins on Aug 1.
