Hans Schneider had a full morning Saturday.
He was sworn in as mayor of Wellington at 9:15 a.m. A half-hour later, in his first act in office, he presided over the wedding of his ex-wife.
“It might seem a bit odd, but it works for us,” Schneider said as he married Bobbi Freeman and Mike Conard on New Year’s Day. “The happiness that wasn’t there for us, I wish you in the years ahead.”
Celebrants clapped and laughed a bit at the twists of fate over the years that brought this crew together.
Schneider’s current wife, Wendy, and Bobbi are friends and even backpacked in the Smoky Mountains this past summer. “People think it’s the oddest thing,” Wendy said.
“I’m happy to do it,” Schneider said just before the service. “I’ve had a good relationship with my ex and still do with the children. It’s easier to build roads than burn bridges and there’s always something positive that comes out of anything.”
Schneider puttered in his office after the swearing-in ceremony and before his first official act, making plans for decorating with pictures of his family and Batman memorabilia.
“I’m a big Batman fan,” Schneider said. “He was a crime-fighter. But he was just a regular guy trying to do extraordinary things. That’s what public service is all about.”
