Nearly 6,800 jobs are expected to be generated during the construction phase of the proposed NEXUS project.

If given the green light to move ahead, the natural gas pipeline would stretch 255 miles from Kensington, Ohio, to Willow Run, Mich.

According to Spectra Energy, more than $650 million in wages and $830 million in total economic activity is expected to be raised during construction.

The majority of the workers are expected to be in Ohio. Estimates show the potential for 5,325 jobs here compared to Michigan’s 1,533 jobs.

In Lorain County, the pipeline will stretch roughly 21 miles and offer 408 jobs that will need to be filled for construction and operation.

The proposed 36-inch diameter pipe would pass through Pittsfield Township and cross Oberlin’s southern border.

Our county would produce the sixth-highest number of jobs among the 13 counties in Ohio the natural gas line will pass through.

The largest number is expected to total 907 jobs in Sandusky, while job creation would add up to zero in Huron and Henry counties.

If the pipeline is approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in November 2016 then it’s expected to generate $45.5 million in annual tax revenue among Ohio and Michigan.

Ohio alone is expected to generate $43.2 million in tax revenues and have a $697.1 million total economic impact, Spectra claims.

The NEXUS pipeline will generate $2.9 million in annual tax revenue have a $55.4 million economic impact in Lorain County alone.

According to information on the gas company’s website, the tax revenue can be invested in schools, roads, public safety, and other local government projects or services, “all of which improve the overall quality of life for the people who live in these communities.”
