Sale-a-bration at old McCormick
Want to own a piece of the old McCormick Middle School? Items from the building will be on sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the old building on South Main Street.
Items for sale will be moved into common areas such as the gymnasium, cafeteria, and library.
“We’re asking for donations if anyone would like to purchase any of the items,” said district superintendent Dennis Mock.
Expect desks, chairs, filing cabinets, shelving, tables, and more. Nothing that is attached to the walls — such as clocks or chalkboards — will be on sale because of the potential of disturbing asbestos.
Everything must go. That’s because educators need to completely clear out of the old building by Dec. 14.
“We’re kind of in a tight spot. We have to get out so quickly we didn’t have time to organize a more traditional sale,” said Tim Wulfhoop, business manager for the Wellington Schools. “It’s a three-hour deal.”
Funds from the sale will go to the general fund, Wulfhoop said.
A demolition crew will dispose of anything remaining at the end of the sale. Bricks will be for sale and available after the asbestos abatement, which is expected to take up to 10 weeks.
Celebration at the new McCormick
A dedication ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13 at the Wellington High School gymnasium. A ribbon-cutting and tours of the new middle school building will follow.
New sign of the times
A new electronic sign will be placed at the front of the Wellington High and McCormick Middle schools campus Main Street entrance. A traffic light will also be installed at the school entrance and exit.
